In 1805 the British Fleet, led by Admiral Lord Nelson, defeated the combined fleets of Spain and France. The Battle of Trafalgar was not just the turning point of the Napoleonic War, but it established British supremacy of the seas for the following centuries. battle of trafalgarnelson

The Anniversary

To mark the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar celebrations were held throughout the country, but the highlight was in Portsmouth. The three navies involved - Britain, France and Spain - were represented in a Maritime Festival. The flagship Victory was the centrepiece and the highlight was the first 52 gun broadside salute to be fired from the ship in 200 years. wreath salutewreath layingbroadside england expects

How we did it

A total of 50kg of black powder (traditional gunpowder) was loaded into 52 cannons deployed over four decks. Each cannon was individually fused with a pyrotechnic igniter and all were connected to a central control point to ensure split-second timing of the salvo, and perfect cueing within the timetable of the ceremonies. broadside
